1. Free copy of TibetD Reader Software (Windows):
To read our free texts and databases you will need either TibetD Reader or TibetDoc. If you
have purchased any of our software packages you will have the software already. You can

Note that this software is for Windows. We have Macintosh OSX and Apple iOS versions of TibetD Reader for use with our commercial dictionaries, but they only work with those dictionaries and are not available as separate products. The Windows Reader will work in all versions of Windows from XP up and has minimal memory and disk storage requirements. the Windows version here is 5.41 built on January 15, 2015. Commercial software does not fully support Tibetan text formatting and mostly does not allow for searching Tibetan text. For example, even the very popular Adobe PDF system has trouble with these things. For this reason, we made and use our own software for presenting Tibetan text. One of the special features of our software is that it is the only software in the world aware of all of the details of Tibetan text formatting. Another feature is that has exceptional search capabilities for Tibetan text. Our TibetD Reader is like Adobe Acrobat except that it handles Tibetan text with all of its specialized requirements, perfectly. This gives you a remarkable tool for working with Tibetan text.

Windows:
Download a package containing samples of the following three dictionaries and one
reference work. The files in this package are short samples only of each reference
work. For example, there are about 200 entries only out of tens of thousands
from each dictionary. The entries have been carefully chosen so that you can
get a good feel for the content and quality of the dictionaries. The package
also contains a quick guide to the use of the Reader with the dictionaries. The
guide will show you how to get started with the Reader and how to get the most out of
the dictionaries. It is strongly recommended that you read that guide first
after download.
You will need either TibetDoc or TibetD Reader to read these samples. If you have purchased any of our software previously, you have the software needed already. If not, a copy of the free Reader mentioned (above) is included in the package and you can install and use that. the Windows evaluation package. |

3. Texts and Reference Works for Tibetan Studies:
We have a variety of important texts from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition in electronic
form. Many are free and some are available by purchase.
There is a wide range of Tibetan Buddhist texts in electronic form available for • free download here. These texts are in TibetD format. There are also free reference works on the other pages on this site dealing with dictionaries, texts, and reference works. To get a full view of what we have and how it can be used, we recommend that you go to the PKTC home page and thoroughly investigate all areas of the site from there. The • sitemap is also very useful in that regard.
To read these texts, you will need either TibetD Reader or TibetDoc. If you do not have either one, use our free TibetD Reader available • on this page to read them.

4. Tibetan Typeface Samples
This document contains descriptions of all our Tibetan typefaces and samples of them in pecha form for
viewing and printing. • View in PDF-format or

5. Free Tibetan Typeface: Tibetan Machine
We are well known for having the best Tibetan fonts in the world. All of our
Tibetan fonts are available in unicode and non-unicode formats to suit every
need. You can read more about all of our
Tibetan typefaces • here. Of them, the standard
workhorse font "Tibetan Machine" has been made available for free. You
read about the typeface in the documentation included with the download
file or • here.
The compressed (zip) download file includes:
| 1. TibetanMachineUnicode, the authentic unicode version of the font. Use this to replace the badly damaged version called "Tibetan Machine Uni" available from University of Virginia; | |
| 2. the non-unicode version of the font called "TibetanMachine" in our TCC encoding; | |
| 3. the non-unicode version of the font called "TibetanMachineWeb" in a non-unicode special encoding which is useful in various ways. |
Just download the file, uncompress it, and install the needed fonts using the usual methods (there is no need to install the ones you do not need). The TibetanMachineUnicode font is a single font, the Tibetan Machine font set in TCC encoding has five fonts in it, and the TibetanMachineWeb font set has ten fonts in it. Documentation for the typefaces is included in the download file.
We put this typeface into the public domain under GNU licence some years ago. It is an excellent typeface that can be used for any purpose. The fonts are free and can be used for any purpose without further permission. The fonts can be freely copied and given to others. However, we would prefer it if the fonts were not made available for download on other sites but that a link to here was provided; thank you!
The unicode typeface is a standard Opentype TTF typeface; it works on all platforms that fully support Opentype fonts such as all versions of Windows from Windows XP on, all versions of Macintosh OSX from 10.5, Linux, and so on.
6. Sanskrit Diacriticals:
This is a set of five, professional-quality typefaces containing a full set of roman letters with
the diacriticals needed for IAST Sanskrit. Keyboards for their use are also available. The
typefaces are unicoded. For full information see here.

9. Documentation on Tibetan/Bhutanese marks and signs:
The PDF file here contains information about marks and signs being considered for
inclusion into the Tibetan Unicode 3.0 standard. It contains a wealth
of information about Tibetan and Bhutanese signs not elsewhere

10. Replacement Typefaces for Monier Williams Sanskrit-English Dictionary under Windows Vista and later
The electronic edition of the Monier Williams Sanskrit-English Dictionary
produced in Koln, Germany, in the 1990's uses custom fonts for the input box in the main
window of the search program and in the Word version of the lookup, too. These fonts
were not correctly produced. The result is that they work in Windows versions up to
and including XP but do not work in Windows Vista and later, which is has more stringent
requirements for fonts. The fonts were re-generated by us so that they would
work in Windows Vista and later. Download the file here and use the three fonts in it
instead of the three that came with the dictionary and you will be able to use
the dictionary in Windows Vista and later.
If you are not sure what to do, install the package into Windows Vista or later. When you type in the lookup program, you will see that symbols instead of letters appear. Use the fonts provided by us to replace the existing ones (just right click on a font from us, choose install, and say yes to replace when asked). Now you should see the expected letters when you type in the lookup program.
11. Documentation on Tibetan Punctuation, Grammar, and Pecha Making:
The full manuals of the Tibetan! 5 program for Word and WordPerfect are available here. The programs
are no longer available but their manuals have excellent information on Tibetan punctuation and grammar rules
as it applies to making and formatting Tibetan pecha. To our knowledge, this information is not
available anywhere else. Anyone who is writing Tibetan text or wants to learn some of the
details of Tibetan punctuation will find this information indispensable. There is other information
in the manuals about typing Tibetan and so on which also should be useful.
